San Antonio Dentist Explains Tooth Whitening

With the plethora of tooth whitening methods available today, whitening your teeth has never been more accessible. Dr. Jonathan Quillian, a San Antonio dentist (http://www.culebranorthdentalcare.com) specializing in cosmetic dentistry, outlines the general procedure.

?Before considering whitening your teeth, visit your dentist for a check-up and cleaning, since surface stains will need to be removed before whitening,? says Dr. Quillian. At that time, your dentist can determine if you are a candidate for tooth whitening, because not everyone can use tooth whitening solution.

As Dr. Quillian ((http://www.culebranorthdentalcare.com) explains, ?There are several circumstances that may prevent the use of tooth whitening product. They can include teeth that have restorations, veneers, or white fillings; teeth that have internal staining or root canals; natural tooth colors that are brown or gray in hue; pregnant or nursing mothers; and people with hypersensitive teeth.?

The actual process of whitening teeth entails placing a peroxide solution on the enamel, the clear first layer of tooth surface. This opens the pores of the enamel, allowing the solution to reach the second layer of the tooth known as the dentin. The solution then begins to lighten the dentin, resulting in the appearance of whiter teeth.

?Tooth whitening is considered to be a relatively safe procedure,? says San Antonio dentist Dr. Quillian. ?Most people that use tooth whitening products experience little to no side effects and are satisfied with the results.? He adds that others may encounter a few side effects which can include tooth sensitivity; soft tissue irritation (chemical burn); or disappointing coloring depending on the initial shade of the tooth.

?It is important to have realistic expectations when evaluating your final results,? the San Antonio dentist warns, ?as it may take several treatments to achieve a whiter smile.? He adds that whitening results may not be permanent, as your teeth will naturally pick up stain from foods or beverages or from tobacco use, and advises daily brushing and flossing, as well as regular visits to your dentist for cleanings and examinations.
